Almost everyone has a T-shirt that looked great in the product photo and turned thin, shapeless or itchy after two washes. The photo cannot tell you about fabric weight, yarn quality or how the shirt behaves in a sweaty Chennai afternoon. The product listing can, if you know which lines to read.
GSM: the number that tells you how heavy the fabric is
GSM means grams per square metre. It measures fabric weight, and it is the quickest way to guess how a T-shirt will feel.
- Around 120-150 GSM: very light and airy. Good for peak summer and humid cities, but it can look see-through in white or light colours and may lose shape sooner.
- Around 160-200 GSM: the comfortable middle. Feels like a "proper" T-shirt, drapes well and works for most of the year.
- 220 GSM and above: thick and structured, often sold as heavyweight or oversized tees. Nice in cooler months, but it can feel hot and slow to dry in a humid climate.
A higher GSM is not automatically better quality. It only means heavier. Yarn quality and stitching still matter, so use GSM as one clue rather than the whole answer.
Not all cotton is the same
"100% cotton" on a listing tells you the fibre, not the quality. A few terms you will often see:
- Combed cotton: the short, rough fibres are removed before spinning, which usually gives a smoother and softer feel.
- Carded cotton: simpler processing; can feel slightly rougher and may pill sooner.
- Bio-washed or pre-washed: treated to soften the fabric and reduce early shrinking.
- Supima or long-staple cotton: longer fibres tend to feel smoother, but check that the seller actually states the details on the page.
If a listing hides the fabric details completely, treat that as a warning sign and look at other options.
Blends: when pure cotton is not the best choice
Pure cotton breathes well and feels natural against the skin, which is why it suits most Indian summers. But it also holds sweat and takes time to dry.
A cotton-polyester blend dries faster and resists wrinkles, which helps for gym sessions, travel or daily commuting. The trade-off is that it can feel warmer and less breathable, and some people find it clingy in humid weather. For long hours outdoors in summer, many people prefer pure cotton for everyday wear and a blend for workouts.
Fit and size: where most returns come from
- Compare the size chart in centimetres. Brand labels such as M or L vary a lot. Measure a T-shirt you already like, laid flat, and compare chest width and length with the chart.
- Know the fit name. Regular fit is straight and comfortable, slim fit is closer to the body, and oversized or relaxed fit is deliberately loose with dropped shoulders.
- If you are between sizes, a pure cotton shirt can shrink a little after washing, so many shoppers size up in regular fit.
- Check the customer photos and reviews for comments about length, neck tightness and colour fading, since these show how the shirt looks in real life.
Small details that show quality
- Neckline: a ribbed collar with a bit of stretch keeps its shape. A flimsy neck often wavers after a few washes.
- Stitching: look for double-stitched hems at the sleeves and bottom.
- Print type: screen prints usually last longer; a thick, rubbery print can crack with repeated washing.
- Colour: dark solid colours and very bright shades may fade faster. Wash inside out in cold water to slow this down.
Washing in India: a quick care routine
Hard water, strong sunlight and machine spin cycles are tough on cotton. Wash inside out, avoid very hot water, and dry in shade when you can, especially printed or dark T-shirts. Strong direct sun for hours can fade colours. Check the return window and the size-exchange option before ordering. FAQ
Is 180 GSM good for a T-shirt?
For most people, yes. It is a balanced weight that feels solid without being too hot, and it works for much of the year in most Indian cities.
Will a cotton T-shirt shrink?
Some shrinkage is common, especially in untreated cotton washed in warm water. Pre-washed or bio-washed shirts tend to shrink less, but sizing up slightly in a regular fit is a safe habit if you are between sizes.
Are oversized T-shirts too hot for Indian summers?
They can be, if they are heavy. A lighter GSM in a relaxed fit can feel comfortable, while a thick heavyweight tee is usually better for cooler weather or air-conditioned spaces.
