You don't need a gym membership to get fitter. With a good mat and a set of adjustable dumbbells, you can do yoga, stretching, bodyweight exercises and basic strength training at home, for less than the cost of one month at many gyms.

Part 1: Choosing a yoga mat

Thickness

  • 4–6 mm: good balance for yoga and general workouts. Stable for standing poses.
  • 8 mm and above: more cushioning for knees and back, better for floor exercises and people with sensitive joints, slightly less stable for balance poses.

Material

  • TPE: lightweight, good grip, usually free of the strong smell some cheaper mats have. A great choice for beginners.
  • NBR foam: very cushiony and cheap, but can stretch and lose shape over time.
  • PVC: durable and grippy, but heavier.

Grip and size
Look for a textured anti-slip surface on both sides. A standard mat is about 6 feet long; if you are taller than that, look for a longer mat.

Part 2: Choosing dumbbells

Fixed vs adjustable
Fixed dumbbells are simple but you need several pairs as you get stronger. Adjustable sets (rods plus plates) let you change the weight, so one set lasts much longer. For a home starter kit, adjustable is better value.

How much weight?

  • Total beginners: start with 2–4 kg per hand for most exercises.
  • A 10 kg adjustable set (two rods plus plates) covers most beginner and early intermediate workouts: curls, shoulder press, rows, goblet squats, lunges.

Plate material
PVC or vinyl plates (filled with sand or cement) are cheaper and quieter on floors. Cast-iron plates are slimmer and last longer but cost more.

A simple starter routine (3 days a week)

Warm up for 5 minutes (marching, arm circles), then do 2–3 rounds of:

  1. Goblet squats: 10–12 reps
  2. Dumbbell rows: 10 reps each arm
  3. Push-ups (on knees if needed): 8–10 reps
  4. Shoulder press: 10 reps
  5. Plank: 20–30 seconds

Finish with 5 minutes of stretching on your mat. Increase weight or reps slowly. If you have any injury or health condition, check with a doctor first.

FAQ

Is 10 kg enough?
For beginners, yes. Most people can train comfortably for several months with a 10 kg set before needing more.

Will PVC plates damage my floor?
They're softer than iron, but still put them down gently. A mat underneath helps.

How do I clean a yoga mat?
Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap, then let it air dry away from direct sunlight.
