How to Spot a Fake Discount on Amazon India (and Find the Real Deals)

Disclosure: DealsKoti earns a small commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you.

Scroll through any deals page and you'll see it: "-85%", "-92%", "-95% off". Some of these are genuine steals. Many are not. The difference usually comes down to one thing: what price the product normally sells for.

This guide shows you how to tell a real deal from a dressed-up one, in under a minute.

Why discounts look so huge

The discount you see is calculated from the MRP (Maximum Retail Price). MRP is the highest price a seller is allowed to charge; it is not the price the product usually sells for. For some categories, especially budget smartwatches, earbuds, clothing and kitchenware, MRPs are often set far above the real market price.

Example: a watch with an MRP of ₹19,999 that sells for ₹1,099 shows "95% off". But if it has sold for ₹1,099–₹1,299 for months, the real saving today is closer to ₹100–₹200, not ₹18,900.

That doesn't make the product bad. It just means the discount percentage tells you very little.

The 1-minute real-deal check

1. Ignore the MRP, look at the usual price.
Ask yourself: what has this product sold for over the last few weeks? If you've been watching it, you know. If not, price-history tools and browser extensions can show the price graph.

2. Compare similar products.
If three similar earbuds sell for ₹800–₹1,000 and this one is ₹499, that's interesting. If it's ₹999 with "80% off", it's just the normal price.

3. Check who is selling.
Below the price you'll see "Sold by". Products sold by well-rated sellers, or fulfilled by Amazon, are generally safer for returns and warranty.

4. Read the 1-star and 3-star reviews.
5-star reviews are often short and vague. The middle and low reviews tell you about real problems: battery dying in a month, poor build, warranty trouble.

5. Look for a time limit.
Lightning Deals and limited-time deals show a timer and a "% claimed" bar. These are usually genuine short-term drops and are worth acting on quickly.

How to save more on top of the deal

Bank offers. Many products show "Bank Offer" below the price, like 10% instant discount on a specific card. This is often the biggest real saving, especially on electronics. Read the minimum order value and the maximum discount cap.

Coupons. Some listings have a small "Apply ₹X coupon" checkbox under the price. It's easy to miss, so always tick it before adding to cart.

No-cost EMI. Useful for spreading payments, but check that the price with EMI is the same as the normal price; sometimes the "no-cost" part is only on certain cards.

Exchange offers. For phones and some appliances, you can exchange an old device. The value is often low for budget phones, so compare with selling it yourself.

Red flags to avoid

  • A brand you've never heard of, very few reviews, and an unbelievable discount on an expensive-looking product.
  • Product photos that look like a famous brand, but the brand name is different.
  • Reviews that are all from the same week, all 5-star, with very similar wording.
  • A seller asking you to pay or contact them outside Amazon. Never do this.

How DealsKoti picks deals

Our list is built automatically from Amazon's own data: we look for a meaningful discount, decent ratings and stock that is available, and we refresh prices regularly. We show the time each price was checked, because prices on Amazon change fast. Even so, always confirm the final price on Amazon before you pay.

FAQ

Is a high discount always fake?
No. Clearance sales, Lightning Deals and big sale events do bring real drops. The point is to judge the price, not the percentage.

When are prices lowest?
Big sale events (like the festive season sales) usually bring the deepest cuts on electronics and appliances. Everyday items like clothing and accessories have frequent smaller drops all year.

Can prices change after I add to cart?
Yes. The price at checkout is what you pay. If it changes, Amazon shows the updated price before you confirm.
